Jamaica National Heroes’ Day

Jamaica's Heroes' Day, observed on the third Monday of October, honors the nation's seven National Heroes for their contributions to the country's independence and freedom.

  1. Marcus Garvey – Pan-African leader and advocate for black pride and unity.

  2. Nanny of the Maroons – A fearless warrior who led the Maroons in resisting British colonization.

  3. Sam Sharpe – Leader of the 1831 Christmas Rebellion against slavery.

  4. Paul Bogle – Leader of the 1865 Morant Bay Rebellion, fighting for justice and equality.

  5. George William Gordon – Politician and advocate for the rights of the poor.

  6. Sir Alexander Bustamante – Labor leader and Jamaica's first prime minister.

  7. Norman Manley – Founding father of Jamaica’s independence and leader of the People's National Party.

Most schools, such as Pennants Basic School, in Jamaica celebrate Heroes' Day by engaging students in activities that highlight the nation's rich history and the contributions of its National Heroes.

The celebrations often begin with Heritage Week, which takes place the week before. During this week, schools educate students daily on Jamaican heritage, culture, and traditions.

Teachers shared stories about the National Heroes, emphasizing their roles in the fight for freedom and independence. Students are encouraged to dress in traditional attire.
